The Tekken 4 PS2 video game was commonly flood with critics by numerous for being too unimaginative and by lowering the standard of fighting games. Edge magazine was among the harshest and most respected critics, and they offered the game a 6/10.

Tekken 4 PS2 has less characters than Tekken 3 and 5, and is more 'arcade', meaning there is less skill required to win in the game than there ever was, and even more of winning is based on luck and other variables. For instance, the levels are no-longer flat - there are some levels with steps and little cliffs. While this sounds great, it means that the level can have undue of an effect when it pertains to who ranks in a match, instead of the victor being the one who's the most experienced.
